Fabulous Natural Mandarin Spessartite Garnet in Vintage Russian 14K Setting
A gorgeous, gorgeous, ring!
The estate from which acquired tells us that the ring's origin was Russia, sometime between 1950 and 1960. Often in family histories we have found that stories stray a bit, so we look for additional corroboration from the jewelry itself. In this case we find the "583" Gold millesimal fineness mark. Virtually all of Europe uses either standardized Hallmarks, or the "585" or "14K" Gold mark for 14K Gold. Russia/Soviet Union was the exception. "583" was the mark used, and used consistent with the period attributed to this ring. Looks as though this time the story is accurate. Oh, and in case you wondered, both 585 and 583 are classified as 14K Gold.
It is a stunning ring. Vintage, but near-perfect condition. A beautiful 14K 6-Prong raised setting hosts a large 2.62 Carat natural Mandarin Spessartite Garnet. This round-cut stone is the beautiful and highly desirable bright orange color that can be called the Mandarin or “Fanta” Orange. It measures an impressive 8mm in diameter. A big stone. The ring is a touch over a size 7, and has a weight of 3.0 grams.
A gorgeous non-traditional Engagement Ring, or absolutely right for any special occasion.
