Antique Petite Hand-Made Garnet Cabochon Ring
Just a lovely, lovely, lovely old ring!
The estate estimates around 1900 for this ring. Story goes that it was hand-made and purity stamped in 14K yellow gold by a family member for his girlfriend whom he later married. Prized at the time, as the couple became more and more affluent, this small ring lost favor. A shame. It was worn for a while; left in jewelry box a longer while; worn again; back to the jewelry box; finally resigned to attic storage.
It was an afterthought, as we encounter often. The negotiation for several other fine pieces had ended - client asked if we would be interested in this one.
Of course we would. Who wouldn't?
Maybe it was the idea that it had sat unworn for so long. Maybe just that we just liked it. Whatever the reason, here it is.
The ring is s simple execution of split shank styling with a prong-tipped cup added to hold a small 4mm cabochon. In better light the cabochon is a deep red Rhodolite Garnet. Deep, deep ruby colored. Both setting and Cabochon have weathered the years well, and it has a lovely presentation. The cup seems to can't to one side very slightly, but after all these years, who wouldn't can't to one side? Easily put to center by any jeweler, but we felt, for now at least, that we'd leave it as-found.
The ring is a size 4.
