Antique circa 1900 14K Onyx and Initial "D" Ring
Just Wow. Such a remarkable ring and such a lucky find.
This antique beauty comes to us from an estate on our Big Island of Hawai'i. This is as classic an initial ring as you're likely to ever see. On the interior of the band is stamped "Maiden Lane" and "PAT.MAY 14.89". Our research shows that this style ring was hugely popular around the turn of the century, about 1900, and that's what we believe the date of this ring to be, plus or minus 10 years. About 125 years old! Really! We have been unable to discern the significance of "Maiden Lane," although we have found references as a street name in several locations, including New York and San Francisco. Other rings of this style, and presumably by the same maker, have similar, albeit different, names, and the PAT date differs.
The ring bears a classically rendered Old English Styled Capital "D" which is inset with natural Diamonds. It is bezel set onto an Onyx Cabochon and is secured by a screw that is accessible from the underside of the ring. The shoulders of the ring are highly stylized. The setting is 14K Rose Gold.
This ring is in remarkable condition for its age. It has previously been sized down, and the re-sizing was done well. The size is now a Size 10 and the ring has a weight of 6.7 grams.
This is a rare offering as we simply do not see rings of this style, age, and in this excellent condition often.
