Vintage South Sea Pearl "Spinner" Ring
Just Wow!
With the assistance of the estate from which acquired, we conservatively date this ring to the late 1940s or early 1950s. It is a very special ring for so many reasons.
The Pinctada Maxima Oyster was first discovered off the coast of Australia in the late 1800s. Because of its large size it was originally harvested for its shell rather than its Pearl. For many years Australia was providing upwards to 75% of Mother of Pearl used worldwide for making shirt buttons. The occasionally found natural Pearl was a bonus.
In 1956 Australia saw its first small efforts at culturing Pearls in the Pinctada Maxima Oyster, although full-scale commercial production of Cultured South Sea Pearls didn't begin until the 1970s.
On that early timeline from when only natural South Sea Pearls were occasionally found, to initial commercial production in 1956, this Pearl came into being.
This Pearl measures 8.5mm. It is White with Cream and Light Rose Overtones. The Pearl is drilled through and mounted in a 14k Yellow/Rose Gold Setting to allow the Pearl to "Spin" on a wire axis so that the entire Pearl can be seen as it rotates. Not only is this a beautiful South Sea Pearl, but it also has the allure of its significance in the history of early South Sea Pearl production.
We are comfortable in saying that there isn't another South Sea Pearl Ring like this to be found. Truly One-of-a-Kind. It will arrive in an upgraded Cherry Wooden presentation/storage box as shown.
