Period 14K Art Deco Authentic Precious Mexican Fire Opal Ring
Authentic. The Real Deal. Rare. Scarce.
First, a bit of explanation. When most people hear the term "Mexican Fire Opal" they think of the transparent-to-opaque, or nearly-opaque, faceted orange gemstone. But it wasn't always so.
Opals have been mined in Mexico since around the 14th Century. But what has changed over the years is the definition of the term “Fire Opal.” According to some experts, the Mexicans themselves label any Opal with Play-of-Color as “Fire Opal.” It wasn’t until the 1970s that German gem cutters, looking for faceting material, began attaching the name “Fire Opal” to transparent/near-transparent Non-Play-of-Color material with yellow-orange to red body color. Today, to be more definitive, the term “Precious Mexican Fire Opal” is used to describe Play-of-Color Cabochon Opals with yellow-orange to red body color. Those faceted opals that do not have Play-of-Color are called simply “Mexican Fire Opal.”
Which brings us to this beauty. From the Art Deco period in 14k is this exquisite ring. The cabochon is the "Precious Mexican Fire Opal" which, in this color and with this play of fiery color (much better, actually, than the photos), is very, very - exceptionally rare. Accented simply by 4 seed pearls, is has gorgeous symmetry and presents beautifully. In many, many years in the business, I've only seen 3 of these gems. What a treat!
Made by the hands of a master craftsman, this early handmade Art Deco natural Precious Fire Opal Ring displays exceptional craftsmanship in every aspect of its exquisite detailing. It is a finely, finely custom made ring.
The untreated Precious Fire Opal measures approximately 7.5mm x 5.7mm x 3.2mm as estimated in the setting. The ring is a size 3.5 (3 1/2) but could be sized upward a size or two by a competent Goldsmith or Jeweler. The ring is enhanced by 4 Seed Pearls that are placed for optimum balance of the Ring. The face of the ring is sizable, measuring approximately 17mm North-South and 12mm East-West.
When examining the photos you will be different colors and appearances depending upon light, angle, and/or background. Precious Opal will display differently under different lighting and in different setting. Always something new and beautiful.
